Buy Bad Asset from Banks is this a good idea?

Timothy Geithner’s a Treasury secretary plan's to help a bank, buy off a bad real estate assets, which may involve U.S. to economy collapse.

Some financial market's will be eligible to participate in the Treasury’s new program. Investment funds will be able to buy and sell inside the securities program, which was announced few days ago by President. They also unveiled a companion program to finance purchases of whole real estate loans that will only allow banks as sellers.

Treasury investments in funds that will buy securities will berestricted to vehicles overseen by only as many as five managersinitially. Those firms each must have at least $10 billion of assets under management; the number and size of managers of the loan buying funds was not limited.
So the program a appear on stable the financial situation in US market and world market. Avoid collapse the Goverment work on some kind of program to increase a Property market, investment market and hole economy itself. To help start building a positive new kind of economy we has to help a big corporations, because it's a millions of jobs and the help a economy a lot. So we should start right from there to bild a new economy, but is this going to be a lesson for ban's in future? Or in some 10-15 years the blow the same baloon with the US market and world Economy.

Lindsay's Latest Smash Hit:

Lindsay Lohan
Hours after attending a court-ordered alcohol-education class, Lohan has already found herself involved in another collision—only this time it wasn't she who was doing the driving.

The 22-year-old diva was sitting in the passenger seat of a black SUV when her driver crashed into a wall outside the Mondrian Hotel in West Hollywood.

The fender bender occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. this morning. Hotel security kept the driver, who also doubled as Lohan's bodyguard, from leaving until they questioned him and took a report of the incident while actress waited in the car, surrounded by swarming paparazzi.

A spokesperson for the Mondrian declined to comment on the matter.

The matter was cleared up yesterday, however, when her attorney presented the court with proper proof showing she had attended her alcohol-treatment course. Afterward, Ronson's residence accompanied by her security detail amid a throng of fans and photographers and drove to an alcohol-education class in Glendale.

Natasha Richardson's Accident

Actress Natasha Richardson, reportedly in serious condition in a Montréal hospital after a ski accident Monday at Mont Tremblant, was walking around and feeling fine for an hour after her accident.

"She was laughing and joking and she walked to her room on her own," Mont Tremblant.

The British-born Richardson, 45, was not wearing a ski helmet when she was taking a private ski lesson on the Nansen, a beginners' run from Mont. When she was near the bottom of the run in a section know as the flats, she fell down. Richardson did not hit anyone or anything before coming to a stop.

"She was accompanied by an experienced ski instructor who immediately called the ski patrol," according to a statement from the resort.

Lacasse tells PEOPLE that there were no cuts, bleeding or other external signs of injury. Ski patrollers assisted Richardson and helped her to her room. She was not put on a stretcher.

About an hour after the fall, Richardson started complaining of headaches. She went to a nearby hospital and was later transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of Sacré Coeur Hospital.

Her husband, actor Liam Neeson, 56, was filming the movie Chloe in Toronto when he got the news.

Tapout founder "Mask" killed in early morning auto accident

"Mask," one of the popular characters from MMA apparel Tapout, died early this morning in a automobile accident in California.

Mask, who's real name is Charles Lewis Jr., died when his red Ferrari Modena crashed into a utility pole in Newport Beach at approximately 1 a.m. local time.

The driver of a second car, an older-model white Porsche that is believed to have been traveling at a high rate of speed next to Lewis' car, has been arrested on gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, a Newport Beach Police

Lt. Craig Fox of the Newport Beach Police Department could not confirm the identity of the deceased male until the Orange County Sheriff's Department. However, sources told http://lead-incuranse.blogspot.com/ he was the one who died in the accident.

Lt. Fox said it's not known if either the male occupant (Lewis) or a female companion was driving the Ferrari. After the Ferrari hit a curb and smashed into the pole, the female was ejected from the car and was transferred to the Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where she remains in stable condition, according to Lt. Fox.
Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Fox, a Newport Beach Police officer was on patrol in the area and witnessed both the Ferrari and the Porsche "spinning out of control on Jamboree Road between Bison Avenue and East Bluff Drive."

"It was damaged very badly," the Ferrari, which nearly split into two pieces. "The male was pronounced dead at the scene."

The Porsche initially fled the scene, but police soon located the damaged car a few blocks from where the Ferrari crashed.

Leaving the Porsche were 51-year-old Jeffrey David Kirby of Costa Mesa and 32-year-old Lynn Marie Nabozny of Newport Beach, who were both Insured.

"Through their investigation, [police officers] were able to determine the male was the driver of the Porsche," Lt. Fox said. "He was arrested for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. He was booked ... on a $1 million bail."

Nabozny was arrested for public intoxication and later released.

"There were skid marks found at the scene," said Lt. Fox, who confirmed investigators were still sifting through the crash scene as of noon today. "It appears there were maybe high rates of speed involved, but they don't know what led up to the collision. The officer didn't see that. He barely saw the after effects of what appears to be the possible collision."

Lewis will be remembered as one of MMA's first and true entrepreneurs.

Lewis founded Tapout Clothing Inc. in 1997 with a trunk full of T-shirts and a few thousand dollars of start-up money. Over the past decade, he and his partners have made the company the biggest apparel success story in MMA.

Tapout, which grossed just $30,000 in sales in 1999, pushed that number to more than $100 million in 2008 alone. The company now has licensed retailers (including the likes of Dillard's and Champs) around the world.

A longtime comic-book fan, Lewis and his colleagues, "Punkass" and "Skyscrape," went the make-up-and-costume route soon after launching the company from a San Bernardino apartment. The costumes, grassroots-marketing efforts and an often-praised work ethic made the crew celebrities in their own right.

When not hosting their own TV show on Versus to spotlight up-and-coming fighters, the Tapout members could often be found cageside at major MMA events, including the UFC, which the company sponsors.

General Motors posts $9.6 billion quarterly loss

General Motors posted a $9.6 billion fourth-quarter loss and said it burned through $6.2 billion of cash in the last three months of 2008 as it fought the worst U.S. auto sales climate since 1982 and sought government loans to keep the century-old company running.

The nation’s biggest domestic automaker said Thursday it lost $30.9 billion for the full year and expects to state in its upcoming annual report whether its auditors believe the company remains a “going concern.” GM and its auditors must determine whether there is substantial doubt about the automaker’s ability to continue its operations. GM burned through $84.7 million a day in 2008.

Chief Financial Officer Ray Young said the determination will depend a lot on whether GM gets further government loans and whether it can accomplish its restructuring goals.

Young said that auditors are studying the future of the company because “there’s uncertainty with how the Treasury will view our viability plan,” and “uncertainty on whether we’re going to be able to execute the terms of our loan agreement.”

Rival automaker Ford, which has not sought U.S. government emergency aid, said Thursday it has adequate liquidity amid worsening industry conditions and has no doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern.

GM received $13.4 billion in federal loans since Dec. 31 and says it needs up to $30 billion to stay out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Top GM executives were in Washington, D.C., Thursday to meet with the Obama administration’s auto task force to talk about restructuring and additional loans.

“2008 was an extremely difficult year for the U.S. and global auto markets, especially the second half,” Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner said in a statement. “These conditions created a very challenging environment for GM and other automakers and led us to take further aggressive and difficult measures to restructure our business.”

Young said GM would reduce its structural costs by another $4.5 billion in 2009, from $30.8 billion to $26.3 billion.

GM’s adjusted cash burn for the year in 2008 was $19.2 billion, but Young expects that to fall to $14 billion in 2009 as the company cuts structural costs.

The company still will need more government help, he said, because GM expects the entire auto industry to sell a dismal 10.5 million vehicles in the U.S. this year.

Most of the cash burn this year can be attributed to the temporary shutdown of many GM plants during the month of January, he said.

“We’re not pleased with a negative $14 billion cash flow burn, that’s still a very, very sizeable amount,” he said, “but at the same time we recognize that the industry conditions in ’09 are going to remain fairly challenging.”

GM reported a net loss of $15.71 per share for the fourth quarter, compared with a loss of $722 million, or $1.28 per share in the year-ago period.

Autos task force sees Chrysler, GM electric cars

Autos task force sees Chrysler, GM electric cars...

Obama's autos task force are getting a look at Chrysler's car of the future after test-driving General Motors' rechargeable electric car, the Volt.

Task force members, led by Wall Street financier Steven Rattner and Steelworkers union official Ron Bloom, arrived at Chrysler's Dodge Ram pickup truck plant in Warren, Michigan.

GM and Chrysler are living on $17.4 billion in government loans and have asked for a total of $39 billion. The task force will decide whether the automakers should get additional aid.

Rattner and Bloom spent much of the day at GM's tech center. Television news footage showed them driving silver and white Chevrolet Volts. Chrysler was expected to show off an electric vehicle, among other new products.

The byproduct s Progressive Activity Sedan development idea, the Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo attempts to morph the sedan, and grand touring coupe into a single vehicle. As such, BMW's Germanic perspective on style, comfort, convenience, and luxury can all be found in the Concept 5 Series GT -- a vehicle the automaker claims is equally suitable for long journeys as it is commuter traffic or short trips to the grocery store.

So what is the Concept 5 Series GT, exactly? A PAS, perhaps? Let's start with some dimensions. From the BMW perspective, it fits somewhere between the midsize 5 Series sedan and its X-model SU...sorry, SAVS. Essentially, at 196.8-in. long, 61.2-in. tall, and 74.8-in. wide, the concept slots in just under the 7 Series (199.8 in. for the 750i) in overall length and just under BMW's X models (66.5 in for the in height. Make no mistake -- this is a relatively large vehicle. With an arching rear roofline blending into a turned-up spoiler at the rear, first impressions are of a vehicle in the vein, but with a rear hatch along the lines of the Panamera. Frameless doors -- long a sports car staple -- are also used for the first time in four-door BMW in an effort to lend it a sportier appearance. In fact, like the X6 the Concept 5 Series GT only seats four people, but this concept is considerably taller than, say, the CLS. A gaping version of the famous BMW "kidney grille" is found up front, slanted forward slightly and quite bold in appearance, flanked by swept-back, traditional dual-round headlights with LED corona rings.

Obama Auto Task Force: What Did They Think About Their Detroit Visit?

GM Wagoner Battery Announcement for Chevy Volt.JPGDETROIT -- You could imagine a collective sigh of relief as General Motors and Chrysler executives closed their doors late Monday behind the most important guests they've ever had visit.

And you could imagine them wondering what kind of impression they had made on the representatives of President Obama's automotive task force that will decide their fate. "So what did they think?" they must have been asking.

Yet those task force members, none of whom have automotive experience, remain as poker faced as any card player, not providing even the slightest hint about their impressions of their Detroit visit, their thoughts on the precarious situations of GM and Chrysler and their plans for what they will do when the March 31 deadline arrives.

The first stop on Monday's itinerary for Obama advisers Ron Bloom, a restructuring expert with labor ties in the steel industry, and Steven Rattner, a restructuring expert, along with their fellow task force members, was a two-hour meeting with United Auto Workers union President Ron Gettelfinger. The UAW, a critical force behind the election of President Obama, had no comment on the meeting.

Yet concessions from the union by GM and Chrysler by March 31 is a requirement for keeping the government loans they have received and for any chance of their obtaining additional funds, which both automakers have requested. Coincidentally -- or not -- UAW members who work for Ford, which has not sought government loans, on Monday ratified a concessionary contract similar to what GM and Chrysler are seeking.

Then it was onto GM's massive Technical Center in the Detroit suburb of Warren, Michigan, where the task force members got to test-drive a version of the Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric car, due out in November 2010, and a fuel-cell-powered concept. There they also met with GM CEO Rick Wagoner, GM President Fritz Henderson and GM CFO Ray Young.

In a statement, GM said: "We were pleased to host the task force so they could experience firsthand the new products and technologies that are an integral part of GM's near- and long-term competitiveness. We look forward to continuing to support the efforts of the task force as they move quickly to address their critical tasks."

The statement added: "We believe today's visit provided a constructive glimpse of GM people, their passion for their work and the technology solutions that are behind the pages of our viability plan."

The task force then toured Chrysler's nearby assembly plant where Dodge pickup trucks are made. They met there with Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli, Vice Chairmen Tom LaSorda and Jim Press and CFO Ron Kolka. Chrysler said in a statement that they showed their guests current and future product plans, including electric and hybrid vehicles.

Now it's back to Washington, D.C. where the task force is winding down its information gathering, capping it off with a visit by Toyota's Jim Lentz on Wednesday morning Lentz is expected to discuss Toyota's concerns about the precarious state of the U.S. auto parts sector this week. Toyota, which sources about half of its components in the U.S., supports government support for automotive suppliers. Suppliers have asked for up to $18.5 billion to keep operating.

Administration sources told media outlets that the trip was a success and that the White House understands the need for urgency and deliberation and the task force will work "around the clock" on industry issues.

Meantime, GM and Chrysler face a March 31 deadline to negotiate concessions from the union and bondholders in order to keep the $17.4 billion in federal loans they already have received and to have any hope of obtaining additional funds, which could add up to another $21.6 billion.

Even then, they face an uphill battle to obtaining those added funds from Congressional Republicans, some Democrats and even the American public, who in repeated surveys say they don't want the government to lend Detroit automakers money.

Auto Industry

OPPORTUNITIES

The industry is very concentrated, with the top 8 global auto companies having more than 90% of global revenues and the top 50 global auto parts companies having 80% of global revenues (the top 4 US tire producers have 75% of the US market). There is a focus on automation and simplifying product lines to lower costs and benefit from economies of scale. The average car now needs only 15-25 man-hours per vehicle and this drops 2% annually.

Hybrid/alternative cars represent a source of growth in the future. gains by hybrids/alternatives will be slow, and they are now only 4% of cars on the road. The automakers have been receiving TARP funding from the Treasury to cover cash burn issues. The exact amount continues to be a moving target.

WEAKNESSES

re below expectations and have been for some time. Some of these companies are nationalization candidates, which would leave equity holders with no value. Demand for autos is down (15-20)% due to a weak economy and weakening real estate market. Demand is also hurt by weakening employment. The recent credit crunch is crippling to auto sales, and this has a trickle-down effect throughout the industry.

Furthermore, there is a slowdown of SUV sales, which are 55% of sales (cars are 45%). Imports have also been more competitive, as they tend to have better gas mileage. Costs for domestic producers is much higher than seen for foreign producers, and this is creating a loss of market share in the US by US producers. The presence of unions has led to costs being much higher than seen in other countries.

Pricing averages (2)% in this sector annually. Incentives are increasing as the industry is trying . Overcapacity is about 20% in this sector. Pension deficits are rising due to a weak stock market, lower interest rates and less pension funding.

BMW Sauber F1.09 launch

A first look at BMW Sauber's 2009 Formula One challenger, the F1.09

BMW Sauber roll out their 2009, F1.09. Willy Rampf, BMW Sauber Technical Coordinator, said;" Our aim was to build a car with high aerodynamic efficiency and in doing so claw back as much downforce as possible". To this end the F1.09 features some very intresting aerodynamic elements. Rampf also predicted that the cars will be running maximum downforce setups at many more circuits than in 2008.

The new F1.09 featured some very subtle aerodynamic details in the nose area.

These scallops in the side follow what appears to be a trend of tweaking the nose cone aerodynamics. The profile of th shows a similar level of attention to detail.

Also present were these fences on the front wing elements, presumably to prevent air-flow spilling off the effective elements of the wing into the non-downforce generating middle section.

Underbody temperatures are obviously an area of great concern to teams given the regulations regarding vents, chimneys etc on the side pods. To address this teams seem to be trying to find escape routes for hot air whilst keeping drag to a minimum. The F1.09 featured these small louvers on the base of the side pods and vents on the top of the engine covers.
Evident on the wing end plates were these removable panels, presumably for access to the wing control servo-motors.

BMW Sauber not convinced KERS will be ready

BMW Sauber are not sure that their KERS device will be ready to race in Melbourne

A major talking point at the launch of the BMW Sauber F1.09 in Valencia this morning is that the team, which has been one of the strongest supporters of KERS in Formula 1, may not run with the system fitted at the first round of the 2009 World Championship, in Australia. Indeed, according to BMW Motorsport Director, Mario Thiessen, the BMW Sauber F1 KERS "is still not ready to race, although we are pushing to have it prepared by the time of the first Grand Prix, in Melbourne".

Thiessen also explained that, regardless of whether KERS is fitted to the F1.09 or not, its positioning and layout in the car has now been finalised. He further revealed that teams could well decide on a race-by-race basis whether to use KERS or not, depending on the potential benefit the fitting of the system would have on lap times at a specific circuit. It is generally felt that the those tracks with long straights will be the best candidates for maximising the potential benefits of KERS.

When queried about the decision to opt for an electrical (BMW will be using lithium-ion batteries as an electrical energy storage medium) as opposed to mechanical flywheel-based KERS, Thiessen highlighted packaging, safety and durability as issues that potentially militate against flywheel systems. Somewhat controversially, he also claimed such mechanical systems are not particularly relevant to developing crossover road car technology, which is deemed of great importance to the Munich car maker.

The message seems to be that BMW Sauber is perhaps not quite as advanced with the development of its KERS as some observers had given them credit for - then again, it could just be the usual F1 pre-season strategy whereby teams attempt to confuse their rivals as to their state of readiness.

Perhaps significantly, Thiessen admitted that the new Formula 1 technical regulations for 2009 had generated a great deal of technical uncertainty for teams. "Formula 1 is not a very comfortable place to be at this moment because of all the unknowns caused by the new regulations, but it is exciting," he observed with a wry smile.

New 500bhp Riley sports racer

Mooresville built prototype is revealed

Riley Technologies has unvieled its new sports prototype. Designed primarily for trackdays the new car is fitted with a 500bhp V8 engine. Pictured here in the final stages of construction (note the lack of rear wing - not yet fitted) the car should be a low cost route to very high performance.

Aston Martin LMP has troubled track debut

Aston Martin's new Le Mans Prototypes made thier track debut at this weekends Le Mans Series (LMS) test at Paul Ricard in France. One of the cars was heavily damaged when the driver lost control and hit the barriers head on. A big accident this early in the cars development will be a major setback. In the run up to the test a dispute between Lola and Aston Martin came to light regarding the name of the chassis. Comments made by David Richards sparked a strongly worded response from Lola;

Lola Aston MartinLola Aston Martin

The 2009 Lola Aston Martin is significantly different visually to the Aston Martin engined Lola B08/60 used last year by Charouz Racing Systems at Le Mans. Though the 2009 spec car is essentially the same design with heavy aero revisions.

"following a number of inaccurate and misleading quotes given by the Aston Martin Chairman David Richards, regarding the supply of the Lola LMP1 chassis to Aston Martin Racing for this year's Le Mans 24 Hours and Le Mans Series programme, Lola has decided to set the record straight. The Lola Aston Martin is a Lola designed and built car. It is not a ‘radical re-design' as stated by Aston Martin Racing. Aston Martin has undertaken some body styling cues that required some CFD work to try to reinstate the Lola Aero performance and minor bespoke mechanical changes to accommodate the styling changes. Lola has spent over two and a half years in the research and development of this state of the art car costing several millions of pounds. Aston Martin contracted with Lola in December 2008 to buy our cars because they knew that as a result of the 2008 performance that we had the leading LMP1 customer car and Aston Martin didn't have the time to develop their own car. When Aston first mooted rehomologation of the Lola car and was given the cost of their contribution to IPR and R&D the negotiations broke down. It is completely inappropriate that Aston Martin should now attempt to achieve "ownership" through misrepresentation in the media. Lola's binding contract with Aston Martin is for two cars the nomenclature of which under the contract is that the cars must remain Lola Aston Martin."

Ferrari first to reveal 2009 F1 car

Fiorano is snowbound

Ferrari took the covers off its its definitive 2009 Grand Prix racer early this morning. The F60 is the first new rules compliant car to appear and its distinctive look will certainly attract comment in the coming days.

The F60 is the fifty fifth single-seater built by Ferrari specifically to compete in the Formula 1 World Championship. The name of the car was chosen to celebrate the Scuderia's participation in all 60 editions of the Formula 1 World Championship since 1950 to date.
The project, which goes by the internal code name of 660, represents the Scuderia's interpretation of the regulations that come into force this year, which include very many new elements.

As far as the aerodynamics are concerned, these modifications are the result of the work carried out by the OWG (Overtaking Working Group,) set up by the FIA in collaboration with the teams to produce a set of rules aimed at encouraging more overtaking on track: the front wing, which has a neutral central profile, common to all, is developed mainly on its side elements and is much wider than in the past: the bodywork can no longer carry the slotted apertures that had characterised the Ferrari cars over the past few years.
Other aerodynamic devices are also significantly reduced; the rear wing is higher and narrower than in the past; the diffuser has been moved rearward. The combination of changes naturally led the initial design phase down radically different routes when it came to the side pods and protection components: the apertures have been reduced in size and moved rearward, while the upper and rear elements are larger to aid the exit of air.
The new rules regarding aerodynamics have also led to modifications to the suspension, as these elements can no longer be enclosed to the same extent. The suspension system and the whole layout of the car have been redesigned in the light of the new rules in order to achieve the correct weight distribution.
The design also takes into account two other significant changes in the 2009 regulations: the possibility of using a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) and the reintroduction of "slick" tyres.

The KERS on the F60 was designed by Ferrari in collaboration with Magneti Marelli and is centrally mounted on the engine under the rear part of the chassis; its management has involved all departments of the Gestione Sportiva. The return to tyres with no grooves is another element which is down to the work of the OWG, as is the introduction of a flap on the front wing that can be adjusted by the driver when the car is moving.
The software for managing this tool, as well as for the KERS, was designed in Maranello. The transmission has been redesigned to optimise the aerodynamic efficiency of the car. The gearbox casing is again made in carbon and is still positioned longitudinally. The gearbox is fitted with a speed shifter. There is also a new braking system, with callipers designed by Brembo. Other important rule changes for this year stem from the work of FIA and FOTA (Formula One Teams Association) aimed at producing a significant reduction in the teams' operational costs. As far as the engine is concerned, which retains its longitudinal mounting in the F60 and continues as a load bearing structure, the rules now state that a total of eight engines may be used over the 17 Grand Prix race weekends on the calendar.
Accordingly, the maximum permitted engine speed has been reduced to 18,000 rpm and the distance target for each unit is now around 2,500 kilometres. Furthermore, modifications have been made to the inlet trumpets, the position of the injectors and the configuration of the exhausts. The changes to the regulations mean that, on the reliability front, Shell has played a fundamental role in defining the lubricants for both the engine and gearbox.
As usual, the technical partners have played an important part right from the design and development stage of the entire car. Apart from the aforementioned Shell, a significant contribution has been made by the FIAT Research Centre, especially in the use of its simulation systems and by Brembo, in the development of the braking system. As usual, great attention has been paid to the management and optimisation of the materials used, at the design stage and through quality control, aimed at maximising performance while maintaining the highest possible levels of safety.

Filippi returns to Super Nova

Luca Filippi, ART, GP2, 2008The Super Nova team have confirmed Luca Filippi will partner Javier Villa during the GP2 main series this year.

Italian Filippi, who raced for ART Grand Prix in 2008, will thus return to the team for whom he drove for in GP2 back in 2007, when he finished in fourth place in the standings.

"I am really pleased to be back at Super Nova because this is what I really wanted since the last test at Paul Ricard and since then we have been working really hard to finalize a deal," said the 23-year-old at Paul Ricard, where he will be testing tomorrow.

"And now we have I only want to better the 2007 year we had together, I can see the potential of the team and how hard they are all working to make 2009 great year and I couldn't wish for a better place to be this year."

Filippi will be driving alongside Spaniard Villa, who was confirmed at the team earlier his month.

Team boss David Sears added: "We are extremely pleased to announce both our drivers for the GP2 2009 season. It's fantastic that Javier Villa got to know the team in the Asia Series and is coming with us into the Main Series.

"We welcome Luca Filippi back, as he has had more success with our GP2 team than any other, when he was with us two years ago!"

Jeff Gordon

Jeff GordonSprint Cup series points leader Jeff Gordon believes his team have finally turned the corner on the set-up issues that prevented them from fighting for the title last year.

The Hendrick driver has enjoyed a good start to his season, finishing twice in second place with a worst finish of thirteenth in the season-opener at Daytona.

He now leads the standings for the second week in a row after being a contender for victory at Atlanta on Sunday, where he challenged winner Kurt Busch on the final restart.

"We kind of had to settle for second," Gordon said about last weekend's race. "It was a great day for us, though. Just driving to the front, battling up front, leading laps, battling for the lead at times.

"We lost a little something there on the long runs, middle of the way on. Those guys were a little bit stronger than us. We were just settling in. But on the restarts we were real strong."

After struggling many times last year with set up issues while trying to get the right handling of the new Cup car at the intermediate tracks, Gordon believes his current trend of results prove that his team have finally gotten over those problems thanks to hard work during the winter months.

Gordon has not won a points paying race since October of 2007, but he is adamant that a victory should not be far now.

"I'm a big believer that you got to walk before you can run," Gordon says. "I think we've turned the corner. This team has really shown consistently in all four races this year that we're a team that can battle up front and for the win.

"I believe we keep doing that, we're going to win races. I think that we haven't really reached our full potential yet either. We're experimenting with something that the guys worked hard on over the off-season, the engineers, (crew chief) Steve (Letarte), all the guys on this team. It's already been paying off. We're just really early into it. I think we can only make it better.

"Of course, I want to win. We've been close. But I'm not going to say we feel like we're frustrated. We're pretty happy the way we're running."

Gordon currently leads the Sprint Cup Series driver standings, 43 points ahead of Clint Bowyer. A year ago the four-time champion was only fifteenth in the championship.

Rookies to get extra practice session

Rookies and drivers outside the top ten in the championship will be able to take part in an additional practice session at most IndyCar Series events this year.

Starting from round two at Long Beach, the eligible drivers will get an extra morning session of either 30 or 45 minutes on the first day of each meeting, before the opening full field practice session.

Indy Racing League president of competition Brian Barnhart hopes the new session will help make the field more competitive and assist teams who have inexperienced drivers.

"We're trying things that help encourage new drivers in the series, in particular drivers advancing from Firestone Indy Lights," said Barnhart.

"With the economy the way it is and limited testing, one of the byproducts is that teams can't afford to - or through rules - can't test very often, which makes an owner less inclined to take a chance on an unproven driver or rookie.

"So you respond with extra track time that doesn't cost anything; it's at a race event weekend. If you're out of the top 10 in points, it's more of a competition issue. Instead of going testing, we're trying to give an opportunity to close the gap on the top 10 in points by giving extra track time."

The additional session will be held at every event bar the St Petersburg season-opener and the Indianapolis 500. All rookies already have to take part in an extra orientation test before the Indy 500 practice days commence.

Haymarket's Autosport revs up with redesign

Haymarket-owned motoring title Autosport has undergone a major redesign, with David Coulthard joining the team.
Autosport: major redesign for Haymarket title

The new-look title, which goes on sale on Thursday (12 March), will feature new writers and new features, although Haymarket, which also publishes Media Week, said Autosport's focus will remain on reporting on Formula One to the British motor racing scene.

Coulthard, the former F1 driver, will be joining the writing team, while Bradley Lord, the features editor of Autosport's monthly sister title F1 Racing, will write a weekly new column.

The magazine, priced at £3, will also feature a new back section, called Final Drive, which will include a weekly guide to what's on in motorsport.

Andrew van de Burgt, the magazine's editor, said: "There is a lot of expectation on our shoulders, given Autosport's 59-year history, but we hope that the changes will make the magazine feel fresh and exciting for both new and existing readers."

According to the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC), the circulation of Autosport between January and December 2008 was 34,442, down 10.1% year on year.

Sister Haymarket title F1 Racing, a monthly, registered a circulation of 58,806 over the same period.

Greg Mansell joins Ultimate for WSR

Greg MansellUltimate Signature have confirmed that Greg Mansell will complete their World Series by Renault line-up.

The son of former world champion Nigel Mansell joins Spaniard Miguel Molina, who announced his Ultimate switch last week, at the squad, which will now run under the USR title.

Mansell had been strongly linked to the team since testing USR's Formula Renault 3.5 machine earlier in the winter. The move marks the 21-year-old's return to European racing after a season in the Atlantic series in the United States, where he took 10th in the championship last year. He had previously raced in Formula BMW and Formula 3 in Britain.

USR team boss Barry Walsh expects podium finishes from Mansell in his rookie season.

"He immediately impressed us with his speed and his technical feedback to the team," Walsh said.

"He raced against us in British F3 two years ago where he proved that he was certainly a chip off the old block. I'm sure, given the right opportunities, a Mansell will once again be standing on the podium at some of the world's greatest circuits before the end of the year."
